Happy New Year! The
busy summer and fall months are over, and the quiet of winter
descends upon our point of land. Bright days of January
with temps in the -20 degree range is what we are experiencing
now. Very cold mornings and clear, sunny afternoons. Crisp and
clean...simply beautiful. The deer are very active feeding
on all the corn we place out for them. Their fur is covered with
frost in the early mornings, and steam just radiates off of
them. The most we have had so far is seven, although the
other day, another 5-6 deer were seen off on the the distant
shoreline, playing in the snow and ice. Then two separated from
the group, and ran right to our shoreline to feed. Pretty cool
sight! Literally hundreds of deer tracks pepper the
grounds and the snow-covered ice now, as they freely roam River
Point's peninsula.

You
must have had a beautiful day like us. All of the snow
is melting in the picture.
Hopefully this is not a bad joke and spring is really on
its way . . . my best season with fall being right
behind that is my vote.
Erin [daughter] was just talking on Saturday night, "You
know what I can't wait for?"
Peter guessed, "Spring break?" "No", Erin replied.
"School to be out for the summer?", I guessed. The reply
was again, "No."
Erin smiled and said, "You both give up? I can't wait
for the cabin!"
We were so very glad to hear that!!!
New picture for my screen backdrop -- six deer having
supper yesterday around 5 p.m.
Just love it!!!
Have a great week,

Hello all!
I've never been to your resort but happened to come
across it in a resort search.
I truly enjoy checking your website and webcam every
couple hours. I love the north country and am
hoping to make it up there soon!
Thanks for the gorgeous view.

We
were in Ely to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary on
October 4th. We come to Ely every other year to visit the
Wolf Center on our anniversary. We made our way out to your
property and found the webcam at the point. It is such a
beautiful view all year around. It means so much more to
have been there. Of all the webcams we visit on the Ely
webpage, yours is the favorite of my wife.
We thought we were cold when we set a record low for the
date of -16 a few days ago. But with your temperate of last
week it appears that we were having heat wave!!

Hi Don and Ida,
You are most
welcome. We enjoy watching the deer each day, and their
many antics. Since it has been so cold (-40 below all last
week--never got higher than -10 each day), the deer have
been so-o-o very hungry. Need a lot of food just to stay
somewhat warm. All the tracks out front going around to the
left-side of the image are from them, too, as they work
their way around
the point. Thank you. Enjoy!
Jane
We
just wanted you to know how much we enjoy viewing your
webcam. And an addition thank you for feeding the deer. It
makes such a beautiful picture.

The "visitor" by the lake was Steve, putting out deer feed! The snow
is so deep already this season, he thought that he should start feeding
them earlier than last year. Yesterday, we watched a lone deer walk across from in
front of the Log Cabin to the far south shoreline.

So who was the visitor by the lake? Or was it one of you? I must look at the lake 20 times a day! Even if I don't see anything in particular, I get to the see the lake.
Happy Holiday!

I'm just writing to tell you that I have your web cam page in my favorites. I look at it everyday. Minnesota has always been my favorite place since I was little. Anyway...Thanks for posting about the wolves, how interesting!!! Last year one time I saw a snowmobile on your web cam and lots of times I've seen deer. Our family vacations were always to Ely, we had a cabin on Moose Lake. Thank you again for letting all of us enjoy your beautiful Minnesota scenery.

December 13, 2008, 9:38 am: AMAZING SIGHT!
A large pack of eight wolves were
viewed this morning! They were witnessed walking from the east shoreline of the peninsula that River Point is situated on, past "The Point" cabin, the Office/Owners Residence, and the "Log Cabin". Walking across the frozen, snow-covered ice approximately 20 yards away from the shoreline, they moved toward the west arm of the South Kawishiwi River. One wolf was further out on the ice, appearing almost as a sentinel for the rest of the pack. All eight appeared to be very healthy, gray in color, and quite similar in size. One of the wolves had clumps of fur standing straight up, otherwise, no distinctive differences from one wolf to another. Two wolves stopped as they moved in front of the Log Cabin, and appeared to engage in a somewhat playful activity with each other.
There had been recent deer activity in front yard of River Point Resort the previous day. Weather conditions are hazy with wind coming out of the NE at 3 MPH. 14 degrees F. On the webcam image the wolf pack first appeared on the left-hand side by the large evergreen tree and proceeded across. INCREDIBLE SIGHT!
