BWCA - Boundary Waters Canoe Area Camping & Oufitting

Canadian Fly-In...Paddle Out
Wilderness Canoe Adventure

The ultimate wilderness adventure...a fly-in trip to the edge of the Boundary Waters BWCA and Canada's Provincial Quetico Park allows you to view the natural beauty and rugged wilderness of the land below you. Whether you want an opportunity to get deeper in the Northwoods wilderness, desire "something different" for the seasoned canoeist, or crave the ultimate Back Country wilderness fishing adventure, this is for you!

A floatplane will pick you up in Ely Minnesota and fly you to a remote lake in Canada's Quetico Park. From there you will begin your Quetico Park wilderness canoeing adventure following the route previously set in your personalized routing and orientation session held at our River Point Outfitting base.

The scenery is breathtaking, the wildlife abundant, and the opportunity to view some of the finest examples of Native American pictographs in North America is wondrous. Your maps will be marked with Canada fishing trip "hot spots" for tasty walleye, lake trout, northern pike, and small-mouth bass. Historic sites will also be marked for you, along with the most desirable outdoor camping sites on your wilderness adventure trip. Most groups "paddle out" to a U.S. landing where your River Point Outfitter van will provide return transport back to our Ely, Minnesota base after your Quetico Park canoe trip.

Checking Out the Hot Spots

THREE DESTINATIONS

  • Lac La Croix Lake: There are many options for canoe trip routes in both the Northwoods of the Boundary Waters BWCA and Quetico from this fly-in destination. Historic Chippewa pictographs to view on Lac La Croix, spectacular Curtain and Rebecca Falls, and fantastic fishing along the fur trade route on Crooked Lake and the border of Canada as you canoe back to Ely in northern Minnesota.

  • Beaverhouse Lake: A 9-10 day canoe trip through the heart of the Quetico Park offers some of the most remote scenery on Jean, Red Pine, Wild Goose, and Orion Lakes, wildlife viewing, and fabulous fishing on your wilderness adventure. Many options exist for canoe trip routes as you head back to Ely, Minnesota.

  • Three Mile Lake: Great canoe trip base camp option with superb fishing. A campsite at Ivy Falls is only about a mile from the fly-in landing point with no portage. Take just one short portage and you will be in remote Wolseley Lake for your Canada fishing trip.

A Canadian charter service will be utilized and flight cost will vary throughout the canoeing season depending upon your entry-point and the number of persons in the group.

Typical length of trips is 5-7 days, except for the Beaverhouse Lake trip which usually requires 9-10 days. Contact us for more information about Outfitting Package descriptions and the cost of these three great wilderness adventures: info@elyoutfitters.com

Ready to Take Off

Don't forget about our overnight tent camping and bunkhouse lodging options before and after the canoe trip.

Quetico Provincial Park

Quetico Provincial Park in Ontario, Canada and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness BWCAW -- a part of the Superior National Forest in northern Minnesota -- together share a portion of North America known as the Quetico-Superior.

This area is north of Lake Superior along a 210-mile stretch of the Minnesota-Ontario border. Together the Quetico Provincial Park and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness BWCA comprise about two million acres dedicated to the protection of the Northwood's wilderness, making the Quetico-Superior one of the largest managed areas in North America for outdoor camping and wilderness canoe adventures.

Quetico Park makes up the northern half of international canoe country. With an area of approximately 1,120,000 acres, Quetico Park is slightly larger than the 1,000,000 acres of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness BWCAW.

Like the BWCA, Quetico Park can only effectively be traveled by canoe. These Border Waters of Canada and Minnesota are void of roads, resorts, and private cabins. And, like the Boundary Waters, the Quetico has many, many lakes and streams, most of which are interconnected by portage trails.

Routes in the Quetico differ in some respects from the Boundary Waters BWCA side of the Quetico-Superior (not better or worse, just different). Portages and the campsites in the Quetico Park are a bit more rugged because the park does not have portage crews managing the area as in the Boundary Waters.

With very few exceptions, one can experience the same scenery, wildlife, great fishing, and fabulous solitude, as well as some busy areas, on either side of the Quetico-Superior border. Probably the biggest difference is the nightly visitor camping fee required by Quetico Park.

You'll find overwhelming natural beauty throughout the Boundary Waters of northern Minnesota-- tumbling rapids, rocky islands, scenic overlooks, quiet lily-pad-filled bays, and majestic stands of ancient white pines, plus you'll have the opportunity to view abundant wildlife and spectacular birds throughout both the Boundary Waters BWCA and the Canadian Quetico wilderness.

Brief History of the Quetico Park:
In Ontario, the Quetico Provincial Reserve was established on April 1, 1909, just two months after the Superior National Forest was established in northern Minnesota. Canadian citizens supported the idea of establishing a forest reserve. Later in 1913, to better protect its many wildlife species, Ontario designated the Quetico a provincial park.
